DC Special 5 - Joe Kubert and family

DC Special 5 (Oct/Dec 69) is my favourite issue of the run, simply because it's an all-Joe Kubert issue. You really can't go wrong with that. Aside from having reprints of stories featuring Sgt. Rock, Hawkman and Viking Prince, it also includes the Kubert story from the Kings of the Wild issue of Showcase.

But what really puts this over the top is the four page introductory tale, starring Joe Kubert himself! We see him living in a huge scary house, and that his neighbours are frightened of the mysterious man. Kubert is shown to spend his days and nights slaving away to meet the deadlines on the various series that he works on.

Still, it clearly isn't all work and no play for Joe. We meet his wife and five (!) children. The two youngest in the panel, Adam and Andy Kubert, would wind up doing work for DC themselves in years to come.Russ Heath makes a very funny cameo, and the story concludes with Kubert getting a letter from President Lyndon Johnson, asking his advice on becoming a comic book artist. How can you not just love it?
