Kamandi - the Last Boy on Earth 50 - Kamandi becomes OMAC

Kamandi - the Last Boy on Earth 50 (April/May 1977) brings back another couple of Kirby characters as the relationship between OMAC and Kamandi gets revealed by O'Neil, Ayers, Alcala and Manuel Auad.

The story recaps the ending of issue 48, as Kamandi, Pyra, Ben Boxer and Dr. Canus get re-united with Spirit and Arna, while Sacker is still up the flagpole. Pyra brings Kamandi onto her ship to cure him, as we saw in the last issue, but she forgot to change the setting from canine to human. For some reason this results in Kamandi being reverted two generations back, becoming his grandfather. He changes into OMAC, which reveals that the grandfather, seen in flashback last issue, is really Buddy Blank.

Since most of the characters in the story, and likely quite a few of the readers, have no idea who OMAC was, Ben Boxer explains. The summary is quite quick, that OMAC, the One Man Army Corps, was a human transformed by the power of a satellite, Brother Eye, into a super powered entity trying to save a corporately dominated world.

Kamandi/OMAC does not know who or where he is, and flees from the spaceship. There is a wonderful page as he encounters death worshipping chimps, and he spends most of the rest of the issue fighting them off, as they try to kill him.

Brother Eye is needed to change Kamandi back to himself. In the final issue of OMAC the satellite had been sealed up. Pyra converts herself back into pure energy and, in this form, melts off the metal sealing up the Eye.

Luckily for Kamandi he succeeded in driving off the chimps before Brother Eye turns him back into himself, removing his added powers.

The story does not have a happy ending, though. Arna has reached the end of her brief life span, and is now rapidly aging, and soon to die.

The story continues in the next issue.
