Flash 128 - Neron's big plot

Waid, Augustyn, Ryan, and Nyberg do a great job with Neron in Flash 128 (Aug 97), as the extent and goal of the villain's plan get revealed.

Picking up on the end of the last issue, the Flash arrives in Hell, and tries to explain to Neron that the Rogues bodies have returned to Earth, while their souls remain in Hell. Wally thinks that Neron will want the bodies back, and that they will be able to work together to resolve the situation. That notion goes out the window when he finds Major Disaster with Neron. The villain gleefully explains how he has been manipulating the Flash. He sent Major Disaster to destroy Santa Marta, and the Rogues to destroy Keystone City. He also knew that the Pied Piper wouldn't use his candle, and that the Flash would, to come to see him. When Neron shows off the wounded and exhausted Jay Garrick the Flash grabs his predecessor and flees, insisting that he will not return to make any sort of deal with Neron.

Wally brings Jay back to Keystone, and explains to the Piper and Linda Park what Neron has been up to. He also calls in the Justice League to help fight the Rogues. We see Linda grab the candle that Wally lit in the previous issue, but no follow up scene to this.

Instead, the action cuts away as Superman, Wonder Woman, the Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern join the Flash in fighting against Captains Cold and Boomerang, Mirror Master, Heat Wave, and Weather Wizard. But since the villains cannot be hurt, the fight becomes futile.

Wally realizes he will have to deal with Neron, and heads back to Hell. These few pages are a bit confusing, as they are intercut with scenes of Wally being a total dick to Linda Park.

By the end it becomes clear that Linda has also made a deal to save the city. In both cases, Linda and Wally's parts of the deal result in them breaking up their relationship. This is what Neron has wanted all along, and that somehow the love he has now stolen from them will be his "key to Heaven."

The story concludes in the next issue.
